Turning Off The gAyTM: A (temporary) Boycott of the DNC & OFA

Well here it is kids!

This is what the foot dragging and promises not kept (and in my eyes, sometimes, outright hostility) from the Obama Administration and the Democrats in Congress has wrought...

It all started, for me, on Inauguration Day when the administration invited the porcine, Taliban-gelical, homophobe Rick Warren to give the invocation and it just seems to have gone down hill (for us) ever since...

Obama promised to be a "fierce advocate" for gay rights once we all got him into office. He's someones (the architects of torture, big money interests, Pharma & the status quo) advocate but certainly not ours!

This past Monday (11/09/09) on Americablog and Americablog Gay, John Aravosis & Joe Sudbay, launched a boycott (temporary, hopefully) against the Democratic National Commitee, Organizing For America, and the Obama re-election campaign. They have been joined by:

Jane Hamsher (FireDogLake)

Dan Savage (The Stranger & Slog)

Michelangelo Signorile (Sirius OutQ & Gist)

David Mixner

Andy Towle & Michael Goff (TowleRoad)

Paul Sousa (Founder, Equal Rep)

Robin Tyler (ED, Equality Campaign, Inc.)

Bill Browning (Bilerico Project)

John Aravosis isn't some slouch, sitting in his mom's basement, ranting about shit he knows nothing about! He has been a "fierce advocate" for democratic ideals and gay rights for years:

- Back in the 90s, he helped sailor Timothy McVeigh (that's his real name) take on the Navy after AOL outed him;
- He launched Matthew Shepard Online Resources a decade ago -- it would now be called a blog -- and helped explode the Matthew Shepard story worldwide;
- He launched StopDrLaura.com and, along with activists around the country (and in Canada), got Dr. Laura kicked off the air;
- He took on Mary Cheney with his DearMary.com Web site, and only a few months later the Cheneys were suddenly opposed to the Federal Marriage Amendment.
- He took on Microsoft in spring of 2005 and Ford Motor Company in December of 2005 over their anti-gay positions, and won!

And that's just a sample.

As they say on their site for the boycott:

President Obama promised to be a "fierce advocate" for LGBT Americans.  But while making modest progress on a scant few issues, on the major campaign promises made to our community, the President and the Democratic party have failed to keep their commitments.

There has been little, if any, pressure from the White House for votes on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).  The administration continues to send mixed signals on the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT).  And we've been told not to expect the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) to even be considered until President Obama's second term.  In the last two weeks alone, we were angered that the Obama administration continued to defend DOMA in the courts -- last June, the administration's lawyers even compared loving gay relationships to incest and pedophilia -- and we were saddened that the White House and the Democratic party refused to help us defeat anti-gay ballot initiatives in Maine and Washington state.  LGBT Americans, our families, and our friends kept our promise at the ballot box, we now expect President Obama to keep his in the White House.

Until the Democratic Congress passes, and President Obama signs, legislation enacting ENDA, repealing DADT, and repealing DOMA, we ask you to join us in pledging to postpone contributions to the Democratic National Committee, Organizing for America, and the Obama campaign.

I've signed the pledge and hope you will consider joining me!

"Susquehanna"

"Susquehanna was written mostly in 2007. It brings together some of our west coast, especially Latin, influences: Flamenco, Greaser Rock, Swing, Ska, Glam, Soca. It's a lot about memory, about time...The Susquehanna is an ugly, muddy, flood prone river back east that I grew up on. The album is about losses and continuing on. It's about love, doubt and fatigue...and ultimately about gratitude."

"Skaboy JFK: The Skankin' Hits of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies"

After experimenting with narrative storytelling through shifting genres on Susquehanna in 2007 (Latin Pop, Swing, Ska, Glitter Rock), the band felt the need to put out something straight forward and fun, taking a cue from their 1998 compilation CD. "Just as our swing fans did before Zoot Suit Riot, fans of our Ska songs have been suggesting that we release all of them together", lead singer Steve Perry explained, "so they wouldn't have to press the skip button over a western swing song with a lap steel, or a Flamenco track. Now they can just throw a Cherry Poppin Daddies record on without having to explain, and possibly apologize for our eclecticism".

With Skaboy the Daddies plan to reconnect with a Ska audience that is largely aware of the band as merely a swing band. "We toured with many of the iconic ska bands when we were coming up," Perry said, "the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Fishbone, Reel Big Fish, The Specials, No Doubt, Madness but at that time we were really touring behind Zoot Suit Riot, so we didn't play a ton of Ska in our sets, now we will."

With A Little Help From My Friends...

As we all know there isn't much that we discover, in this life, without the the influence of someone or something outside of ourselves. As Anais Nin said: 

"Each friend represents a world in us, a world not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born."

Such was the case with my discovery of Internet Radio Broadcasting and that friend for me was Greg Stead.

I met Greg this past August and we have become fast friends!

I was intrigued with his many connections to the music industry which included being a Booking Agent, owning (along with his partner Rick Brannon) his own Professional Broadcast Station on Live365.com (GLS Guitar Storm), and writing for many on-line music publications.

All that as well as being a talented musician and guitar aficionado himself!

He introduced me to Live365.com through his station and I became hooked! Recently he sent me a little boost via e-mail:

Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Queen is by far my favorite band of artists...EVER!

Their music goes from early "metal" to 80's dance and beyond. They prided themselves in not using synthesizers on their early hit albums and only collaborated with one other artist: David Bowie on "Under Pressure".

Their sound ultimately coalesced  into their trademark opera/rock ballads. Which was most recently tapped by My Chemical Romance on "Welcome To The Black Parade".

What can I say about Blind Melon? They are just one of the best bands to hit it in the mid 90's...
This song in particular holds a special place in my being for so many different reasons.

Christian Broadcasting Network Warns Against 'Demonic' Halloween Candy: "Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network posted a blog by Kimberly Daniels recently that warns Christians to forgo celebrating Halloween because of its evilness. Daniels specifically calls out candy as a source of soul-molestation:

'During this period demons are assigned against those who participate in the rituals and festivities. These demons are automatically drawn to the fetishes that open doors for them to come into the lives of human beings. For example, most of the candy sold during this season has been dedicated and prayed over by witches.'

Obviously, we shouldn't be buying Halloween candy, but what about getting it by trick-or-treating?

'Curses are sent through the tricks and treats of the innocent whether they get it by going door to door or by purchasing it from the local grocery store. The demons cannot tell the difference.'"

No they can't, can they?
